POSTED ON:

HHO: Introduce yourself to the fans

J Roy Champion: I changed my name alot coming up, trying to come into my own and find a lane. I ultimately settled for just being me instead of trying to be the next “so and so”. These days I go by J Roy Champion.

HHO: How did your artist name come about?

J Roy Champion: I think I just realized that I needed to be myself. My real name is Jamaal Roy so thats where the J Roy comes from. Champion is just how I be feeling about myself when it comes to this music (laughs).

HHO: Where are you from? Who were your musical influences growing up?

J Roy Champion: I’m from Boston Massachusetts, so I’m die hard east coast rap. I think I fell in love w hip hop around 1997/98. Mase first album had a huge impact on how I saw the game back then. But then it was Mobb Deep “Quiet Storm”, Puffy’s “Benjamins” record, DMX first album, Hov “Volume 2…so many good records.

HHO: What hip-hop albums did you grow up listening to?

J Roy Champion: Definitely have to say X first album was my favorite. It was the first LP moms let me have unedited (laughs). I was blown away.

HHO: What is the current single/project that you are promoting?

J Roy Champion: Right now I’m prepping the release of my second retail project. I dropped 2 singles over the Summer and Fall, but this Winter joint is the one! I dropped it December 8th…its called “Doggy Filter”, featuring my man Mr. Mayor of Ill City. I got Sleo on the production and Intl Show on the boards. I think NOW records are what prepell todays artists where the audience gets drawn in, and once you got the ears you can do whatever with it after that. Thats what I hope to accomplish with this record.

HHO: What would be your dream collaboration with any rapper or producer?

J Roy Champion: Dream collab…I would need to get my hands on some of the late great’s unreleased vocals and do a joint with Big, Pac, L and Pun. Put Aliyah on the hook and ODB or Freaky Tah on the adlibs. That would be crazy!

HHO: How is the response from your fans & djs been?

J Roy Champion: Maaan! We started this Doggy Filter challenge to help promote the record. So the ladies been sending their snaps to the email (dogfilterchallenge@gmail.com) for a chance to have their snap placed in the official video. The response has been crazy.

HHO: What artists do you listen to the most?

J Roy Champion: I have to say I lisen to myself most, but not on no cocky sh**. Im always trying to better my joints so I’m always looking for mistakes or ways I could have excuted it differently. I think as an emerging artist you have to be perfect because your first impression will make or break you.

HHO: What are your plans for 2017? What are you doing that others are not?

J Roy Champion: Man its 2017 or never. Thats how I’m feeling. Like if the people don’t like these then maybe its not for me. So I plan on not sleeping. Thats the price I’m willing to pay so I can be received well.
